About Me
Antoni Abat i Ninet is a Distinguished Researcher at the Institut d'Estudis Europeus (Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona) and a Talent "Banco de Santander" Fellow. He is from 03/24 - 03/27 Scientific Coordinator and P.I. of the Horizon Europe: "Express 2 Specify and Protect the EU Social Contract" grant agreement No 101132426.
From 2020 to 2024, he was a Maria Zambrano researcher at the UAB, and a Faculty Affiliate at the Edwin Jaeckle Centre of Law, Democracy and Governance (SUNY at Buffalo). Prof. Abat is also a researcher at the Arial University Center for the Research and Study of Genocide.
Antoni graduated in Law from the University of Girona in 2001 and was awarded a PhD by the University of Barcelona in 2007. He joined the ESADE faculty of law in 2011 when he was granted the Juan de la Cierva competitive research scholarship by Spain’s Ministry for Science and Innovation. Antoni has taught Comparative Constitutional Law and Ancient Political Thought at the State University of New York and the Lincoln Law School of San José and was a Visiting Scholar at Stanford University Law School. He has taught several courses on the History of Philosophy, the History of Political Systems, and Political Philosophy at the Faculty of Philosophy at the Universitat of Barcelona and the EGLS.
In 2012, professor Abat joined the CTLS of the law school of Georgetown University. From 2013 to 2020, Antoni has been a full professor and chair of comparative constitutional law at the faculty of law at the University of Copenhagen (Denmark).
Antoni’s research interests lie in the intersection between constitutional and EU law, philosophy, and democracy. Antoni is a member of multiple international committees with different functions, goals, and nature, such as the fellowships of the FRS-FNRS, Fonds de la Recherche Scientifique (https://www.frs-fnrs.be/en/l-actualite-fnrs/); Research evaluator of the Agència Qualificació Universitària, a Public Catalan Agency which establishes the programme and institutional review, assessment of teaching staff, knowledge generation, and the internationalisation of Catalan research; the International expert of social science of the Research Council of Lithuania (2018 – 2023) (https://www.lmt.lt/en/science-policy-implementation/expert-activities/become-our-expert/3533); the Academy of Finland (https://www.aka.fi/en/) is an expert organisation in science and research. This government agency within the administrative branch of the Finnish Ministry of Education funds high-quality research, provides expertise in science and science policy, and strengthens the position of science and research; Assessor on external funding and scholarships of the Riksbanken Jubileumsfond, Stockholm (Sweden) (https://www.rj.se/en/) and the Eutopia-Sif – Post-Doctoral Fellowship (https://eutopia-university.eu/).
